  • 12 Step and Zen Buddhism Workshop

    CLASS INFO

12 Step recovery has powerfully transformed hundreds of thousands of lives.  The 12 Steps describe what people can do to free themselves from destructive behavior.  12 Step programs are spiritual programs.  The language in 12 Step literature tends to sound theistic, although it also emphasizes that people should find their own higher power, one that works for them.  This workshop will explore how Zen Buddhism works with the 12 Steps.

We intend to hold three workshops a year, each looking at the topic from different perspectives.  First: looking at the 12 Steps, 4 noble truths, 8-fold path and 16 Zen Precepts.  Seeing how they match up, or not.  Second: The 12 Steps and mindfulness. Living in the now and mindfulness practices.  Working with intrusive thoughts and feelings.  Third:  12 Steps and the three bases of Buddhism, i.e., impermanence, no solid self, and emptiness (interdependent co-arising).  Looking into the changing nature of reality.  Seeing beyond the illusion of a solid self.  Freedom from being locked into what you have been or what has happened to you.

  • Rakusu Sewing Class

Yudo has been a resident member at ZCLA since 2003 and received Jukai from Roshi Egyoku in 2005. He is ZCLA’s Guest Steward, Parking Steward, Photography Steward, Production Artist for the Water Wheel and he runs the online store. Yudo also assists in Development and Programs when he is not offering his practice in service to the sangha by helping others sew their own rakusu. See his story below:

“I remember at the time how difficult it was to sew a Rakusu so the sewing instructor, Gemmon, went to Roshi Egyoku to ask if she could sew it for me. It was important to Gemmon that I receive the precepts and, of course, you have to attend the classes and sew a Rakusu if you planned on having one. So Gemmon sewed it for me!

For three years Sensei Faith-Mind kept encouraging me to sew my own Rakusu and I kept saying no! I finally gave in and sewed it. I made a commitment to sew at least thirty minutes a day and I loved every minute of it!

I’ve always wanted to learn how to sew on a machine and so I went to a Joann store in the Valley and took several classes. From there I bought a basic sewing machine and went on YouTube to learn as much as I could about sewing. I ended up buying a bigger machine and after using that for a while, I bought an even bigger and better machine for quilting. I’ve now been making quilts for the last four years and I’ve sewn at least 25 Rakusus for people who couldn’t sew their own.”
