Training Overview
Along with daily zazen, and liturgy services (Wednesdays thru Sundays), we offer various classes and ceremonies on a regular basis. The following is a partial list of ongoing Zen Center offerings. Please check our calendar for the current schedule.
Zen Meditation Instruction for Newcomers
Classes in meditation (Zazen) for those who are new to Zen practice. Also helpful for those new to ZCLA who have meditation experience with other groups. Check our curriculum for a description of these classes.
Day of Reflection
The Bodhisattva Precepts are the ethical guidelines that we observe as Zen practitioners. Our monthly Day of Reflection on one of the precepts is a core practice of ZCLA and of the Zen Peacemakers. One Satuday morning of each month, a ZCLA practitioner leads us through a schedule that includes two periods of zazen and their own reflections on the precept. We then gather together in council and share how the precept is arising in our own lives. For upcoming dates, visit the programs page.
Founders Service
Once a month we hold a special service to honor our founders, Baian Hakujun Daiosho and Taizan Maezumi Honored One, and the main ancestors of our Lineage. Service is held in the Founders Room on the Saturday closest to the 14th of the month.
Ceremony of Atonement
Every six weeks we hold a ceremony for the renewal of our vows and precepts. The ceremony includes a period of zazen, chanting, bowing, and an opportunity to bear witness to our conduct in the presence of the Sangha. Those who have received the precepts are asked to attend this ceremony regularly. Open to everyone.
Intensive Practice Periods
Every fall, the Zen Center has a 90 day intensive Practice Period (Japanese = ango) in which sangha members make a commitment to deepen their practice. Oftentimes this coincides with a student being selected as the head trainee (shuso), a position they will hold for a year.
SALA (Social Action Loving Action)
The Zen Center is committed to finding opportunities for sangha members to engage collectively in social action through the three tenets of the Zen Peacemaker Order: Bearing Witness, Not Knowing, and Taking Action.
Memorial Services
The Zen Center also periodically offers Memorial Services.
Special Events or Classes
The Zen Center regularly offers various special events, workshops or classes. Click here for the full calendar.
