How does your Buddhist practice engage with the world? How can Buddhism shape and respond to social changes? This program will be an adventure into your spiritual practice. Together we will explore aspects of identity, suffering, stewardship, perspective taking, Prajnaparamita, stretching your window of tolerance, and fun!
LEARNINGS
• Understand “engaged Buddhism” (i.e., liberating self and other through compassionate presence & engagement)
• Radical reflection on ‘engaged Buddhist’ practices in daily life, (e.g., within meditation, study, work, contemplation, ritual, meals, rest, etc.)
• Study Buddhist texts in relation to skandhas, dukkha, desire, emptiness, ethics, and koan.

2. Thich Nhat Hanh. The Heart of Understanding,
3. Thanissara & Kittisaro, Listening to the Heart: a contemplative journey to engaged Buddhism.
4. “Engaged Buddhism in the U.S.” by Funie Hsu + Brahmajāla Sutta
5. Mulamadhyamakakarika (Fundamentals of the Middle Way) by Nagarjuna

Sensei Jitsujo T. Gauthier is a Zen priest, preceptor and Dharma Holder at the Zen Center of Los Angeles, as well as a member of the Zen Peacemakers International. She received Dharma Transmission (denbo) from Roshi Egyoku in 2024. She is also an Assistant Professor and current Chair of the Buddhist Chaplaincy department at University of the West in Los Angeles County. She explores and practices of the Three Tenets in the classroom, chaplaincy work, as well as within seated meditation.
