Circles and Groups
Here is a short description of the many small circles and groups that exist at ZCLA. If you have any interest in participating in any of these groups, please reach out to listed contact. You may also contact our program steward with any questions at programsteward@zcla.org.
Facing Whiteness
We are a circle of Zen practitioners who explore whiteness, white privilege, and racism in our identities and daily lives. While we focus on whiteness, we welcome people of all racial identities to participate. We practice the Three Tenets of not knowing, bearing witness and taking action. Through reading, reflection, and discussion, we aim to expand our awareness of our own racial ignorance and learn to take meaningful anti-racist action. The group meets biweekly for 1.5 hours via Zoom. For more information, contact jitsujo8@gmail.com gb.meiho@gmail.com or annamjosenhans@gmail.com.
BIPOC Group
The Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) Affinity Group was established at the Zen Center of Los Angeles (ZCLA) to provide a safe and welcoming practice space for BIPOC Zen Center Members. We are a forum for discussion and action arising through lived experiences within the Zen Center sangha as well as the community at large. With ZCLA, we work to raise awareness about racial justice, diversity, equity and inclusion among the ZCLA leadership and the sangha community. The BIPOC group generally meets the fourth Saturday of the month, via Zoom, at 5 pm PT (subject to changes due to holidays and ZCLA retreats). Contact Pam Myogetsu Smith at pamsmith813@gmail.com for information and/or to be added to our notification list.
The Buddhist Chaplain Peer Circle (BCPC)
The Buddhist Chaplain Peer Circle (BCPC) follows the shared-stewardship model of ZCLA. It’s evolving mission is to create a temporary refuge and experience of sangha for Buddhist chaplains and caregivers that need a place to rest and connect with peers before continuing on their path. The BCPC values confidentiality, deep listening, and speaking from the heart. Its vision is to build a network of peers that spans across traditions, roles, and ranks.
