Class Details

This fall we are offering an online class series on the Zen Bodhisattva precepts. There will be 6 classes at 2 hours each (with a short personal-needs break in the middle).
Everyone is invited to attend. Beginners are especially encouraged.
The ZCLA Precept & Jukai Series is offered to anyone who wishes to study the Zen Bodhisattva precepts and to consider whether to receive Jukai. Practitioners are encouraged to study the precepts regardless of whether one decides to receive Jukai or not. The decision to receive Jukai is a personal choice and not a requirement for ZCLA membership.
The study of the Zen Bodhisattva precepts is an integral part of Zen practice. Traditionally, the Zen precepts are studied formally at the end of long years of training. We have found that, due to a lack of grounding in Zen as part of our Western cultural upbringing, it is important and useful for us to study the precepts at the beginning, middle and end of training, so that the precepts anchor themselves within the functioning of our daily lives.

Sensei Senshin started studying Zen in the Rinzai tradition at New York Zendo Shobo-Ji in Manhattan in 1987. At Dai Bosatsu Zendo, she received Jukai in 1994 from Eido Shimano Roshi, with whom she studied until 2000 when she moved to Los Angeles. She became a member of ZCLA in 2001 and began her studies with Roshi Egyoku. During her time in New York, Sensei Senshin also studied with various Tibetan teachers and at Fire Lotus Zendo. She was the Program Steward from 2010 till this year. On the Teacher’s Circle since 2016, Sensei Senshin was empowered as Dharma Holder in 2018 and as an independent Zen teacher and Preceptor in 2019. She is a member of the Lay Zen Teachers Association (LZTA), the American Zen Teachers Association (AZTA), the White Plum Asanga (WPA) and the Zen Peacemaker’s Order of Disorder. She was installed as Head Teacher on April 10.

Sensei George Mukei Horner is a teacher in residence at the Zen Center of Los Angeles, where he has been a member since 1984. He is also the Zendo Steward, overseeing the training of service positions for the meditation hall, and an instructor for various classes offered at ZCLA.
